The Overcoats kicked off the tour for their debut album Young with a sold out show at DC9 in Washington DC. Upon first listen I thought this new duo was merely a copycat Sylvan Esso sound meets Lucius style, but after experiencing the Overcoats live I realized how truly unique they are. The humility, graciousness and passion of Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell on stage was unlike any performers I had ever seen before.  Their rich vocals and complementary harmonies were undeniable, but the most refreshing aspect of Overcoat’s performance was the connectedness and emotion shared between the two on stage. At times it felt like they were letting you in on a secret or sharing a private moment with you.  All 12 songs from Young, written by Elion and Mitchell were performed with shoutouts to the mothers and daughters in the audience and several mentions to the “future is female” overcoats_01-1 overcoats_02-2 overcoats_03-3 overcoats_04-4 overcoats_06-5 overcoats_07-6 overcoats_08-9 overcoats_09-8 overcoats_11-7 overcoats_12-10  overcoats_14-12 overcoats_15-13 overcoats_16a-14 overcoats_17-15 overcoats_18-17 overcoats_19-16
