Last week I had a serious case of the “city blues” cured all thanks to Mutual Benefit’s set at Mercury Lounge.

I had been longing for a peaceful escape; a brush with nature — that is what Jordan Lee and his band gave to me with their music. I felt like I was laying out on a forest floor with a starry night sky up above me. As they played their instrumental track “Nocturne”, I felt as if I was falling in love with the summer night — a medley of cicadas and crickets surrounding me. With all of the intricate looping of instruments and Jordan’s gentle vocals I was swept away to another place entirely. He added in quirky quips between songs that made us all laugh with ease before getting swept back into the magic of the music.
They played a wonderful sampling from their new album Skip a Sinking Stone, which was just released in May. I recommend laying out in Prospect Park and having a listen — that’s what I did.
